With a successful track record, the Hellenic Ministry of National Economy and Finance’s innovative electronic auction framework for beach concessions has auctioned over 120 organized beaches across Crete. This new system is set to generate over 1.5 million euros from Crete.

The new system does not include the protected beaches in Natura areas, where concessions and the placement of umbrellas and sunbeds are prohibited.

Ministry data reveals that renting a small beach in Crete for the tourist season can start at 1,450 euros. However, for more renowned beaches, such as a central beach in Rethymno, the rental price can soar to 34,468 euros, reflecting the high value of these prime locations.

So far, more than 120 beaches across the island have been auctioned. By the end of this week, another 16 beaches in Lasithi and Rethymno will join the list. Specifically, in Lasithi, two beaches in the municipality of Sitia are up for auction: Kato Zakros, with a starting price of 5,069 euros, and Diaskari, with a starting price of 8,181 euros.

Additionally, 14 beaches in Rethymno will be auctioned, with rents ranging from 1,837 euros at Pigianou Kampos beach to 19,339 euros at Platanias beach in the municipality of Arkadi.

Among the most expensive beaches auctioned this year are:

  • Falasarna, with a starting price of 25,000 euros,
  • Platanias Chania at 20,133 euros,
  • Kolymbari Chania at 16,234 euros,
  • Agia Chania Marina at 11,664 euros,
  • Analipsi Hersonissos at 12,000 euros,
  • In Heraklion: Gouves, Amnissos, and Ammoudara, each starting at 12,000 euros.

The new system enforces strict regulations and thorough inspections to ensure public access to beaches, transparent use of public property, environmental protection, an enhanced tourist experience, and the safety of bathers.

However, municipalities are responsible for beach management, including inspections, lifeguard services, and proper operation.

Auctions are now exclusively online, promoting transparency and fair competition for eligible entrepreneurs through the digital platform https://eauctions.gsis.gr.
