Birra Korça

Unless you are from Albania, or you are a beer lover extraordinary, you probably never heard of Birra Korça. But, you need to be introduced. The first Albanian beer, Birra Korça’s factory just outside the city of the same name is a hidden gem, and then some. Established way back in 1928, the company is still the second largest beer producer in all Albania.

Since Italian investor Umberto Umberti and local founder Selim Mboria started this regionally famous brewery, the company has produced blonde ale, dark ale, and bottled water. Wars, the communist regimes, and economic turmoil have seen the brewery go through many upheavals, changes in ownership, and more recently a massive reconstruction effort.

Visitors to the brewery today can see it in pristine condition, with chic tasting tours and all the usual beer making gimmicks in place. Current owner Irfan Hysenbelliu’s loving and thoughtful investment of €15 million euro has transformed the brewery into the pride of the entire region.

Technological advancements, the latest Czech and Italian advancements, have also made the business profitable and quality oriented again. The end results are products of superior quality. Not to mention a very cool beer tour.

So the tourist knows, Birra Korca holds an annual beerfest in August to quench the Summer thirst of Albania locals and visitors. The event is the largest in the region. Visit the Wikipedia article for even more interesting facts about this fascinating and award winning brewery.
